Tri-City Mental Health, as a government behavioral health agency, offers structured internship opportunities for second-year Masters of Social Work (MSW) students seeking to fulfull graduate-level field placement requirements.These internships provide supervised, hands-on experience within a public community mental health setting, tailored to prepare students for a successful career path towards clinical social work.

Interns will develop their skills in their chosen concentration in mental health practice working with children and families or transition age youth (TAY), adults and older adults.
Supervision and Training
Interns benefit from weekly individual and group supervision provided by experienced, qualified and supportive field instructors, preceptors and staff. Interns will receive training on electronic health record (EHR) systems, documentation standards, and evidence-based and emerging practices in behavioral health. We are committed to fostering a supportive, inclusive and professionally enriching training environment that equips MSW interns for effective practice within the public behavioral health system.

At this time, our internship program is available to second-year graduate students enrolled in a Master of Social Work (MSW) program. We currently maintain affiliate agreements with the following universities: University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); University of Southern California (USC); California State University, Northridge (CSUN); Dominguez Hills (CSUDH); Long Beach (CSULB); Los Angeles (CSULA); Azusa Pacific University (APU); and California Baptist University (CBU).
To be eligible for an internship placement at Tri-City, your MSW program must have a current and active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with us. Please contact your school’s field education department to confirm whether an agreement is in place. If an MOU exists, your school can coordinate the next steps with our team.
Currently, our internship placements are limited to MSW programs with one of our partner universities: UCLA, USC, CSUN, CSUDH, CSULB, CSULA, APU, or CBU. We are not able to accommodate students from non-affiliated programs, including online or out-of-state institutions at this time.
Our internship program is designed for second-year MSW students enrolled in a traditional track program. Internships follow the academic year, beginning in the Fall term (September) and concluding in the Spring term (April/May).
Our internship program is limited to MSW graduate programs only. However, other opportunities may be available through Tri-City’s Service-Learning Program.
Internship hours are available Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. We do not offer weekend hours. Additionally, all interns are required to be present on Mondays and Wednesdays for trainings and group supervision sessions.

MSW interns may request mileage reimbursement for travel related to internship activities that fall outside of their regular commute. In addition, a stipend is available for interns with a mental health concentration working with children and families, transition age youth (TAY), adults, or older adults.
Yes. All interns receive one hour of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision each week. In addition, interns have access to regular consultation and support from their assigned preceptors throughout the week.
